ACC Receives Commission on Aging Award |

Before an enthusiastic crowd of almost 100 people, the Alexandria Commission on Aging presented the 2012 Excellence in Aging Awards on Tuesday, May 8, at the Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall. Commission Chair Jane King welcomed the audience and Mayor Bill Euille presented the awards. Mayor Euille remarked that he had personally known both of the women for which the Individual awards were named and that he was proud to be associated with honoring both them and the awardees.
Former Undersecretary of State Richard Moose received the Annie B. Rose Lifetime Achievement Award for his initiatives in founding At Home in Alexandria, which helps to enable seniors to remain in their homes and his work on other projects benefiting seniors.
Former Alexandria Police Chief David Baker was presented with the Lois Van Valkenburgh Excellence in Aging Award for an Individual for his efforts to improve the well being of seniors residing at Goodwin House and his work as a member of the Board of Directors of Senior Services of Alexandria.
Two organizations were honored. Adult Companion Care, Inc was recognized for its efforts to provide comprehensive plans and services to help seniors remain in their homes and cope with issues associated with aging. The Rotary Club of Alexandria stepped forward to fund and prepare weekend meals for the Meals on Wheels program and has consistently supported other programs aiding seniors.
The Senior Taxi Driver Awards were presented to Shahid Ahmed and Abdulkadir Abdi for their compassionate and courteous service to their senior patrons.
